SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

LITTLE FALLS - Jim Grant is used to being the fastest wrestler on the mat, with the takedown skills to dismantle any opponent.

On Saturday, the St. Mary's senior went up against a wrestler who was as fast and almost as good on his feet. Grant met the challenge head on and reasserted his status as a serious State title contender.

Facing Essex County champion Tommy Lorenzo in the 125-pound final, Grant found himself tied at 4 with 20 seconds remaining when he reminded the 1,500 fans in attendance at Passaic Valley just how dazzling he is on his feet. Grant hit a perfect single-leg takedown and put Lorenzo to his back for a five-point move, a 9-4 decision and his first region title.

"It was strange going up against someone who was as fast and strong as me on their feet, but I had to show what I could do with everything on the line," said Grant. "It felt good to finally hear the cheers in the finals. Now I want to go down to [Atlantic City] and get the cheers from the bigger crowds."

Grant looked like he would cruise past Lorenzo when he earned a takedown just 10 seconds into their match, but Lorenzo found his rhythm and began battling Grant hard, earning his own takedown to make the final minute interesting. Grant came close to taking Lorenzo down twice during the third period, but fell short. Rather than panic, he focused and found his opening in the match's closing seconds.

"That's a perfect match for him to get because it was a pressure situation and he just beat a kid who, I feel, is going to medal in the State," said St. Mary's coach Scot Weaver. "Without question, Jimmy is wrestling well enough to go down to the States and beat anybody down there if he wrestles his match."

St. Mary's enjoyed a big day, bringing home three region titles. Dave Greenwald (135) earned his third straight crown with an 11-1 decision against Becton/Wallington's Rob Kein. Senior Brian Innis made the Gaels 3-for-3 in the finals with a 9-3 victory against Dave D'Angelo in the 152-pound bout.
